Transcription of original census page): Census 1860, 6th Day of Sept Joseph Gochia 32 m farmer can't read or write Joseph age 8 is from Joseph's marriage to Elizabeth Marcotte, making him a half brother to Michael. Lewis, Aspasie, Michael and Thomas J. are children of Joseph Gauthier and the Elizabeth listed here who is Elizabeth Deville. There are records of a Louis and Valcour and sometimes Valcour Louis Gauthier that have the same birth year as this Lewis. However, the Valcour Gauthier death certificate (place hyperlink here) lists his mother as Elizabeth David. If that is correct, then it's a different person than the Lewis listed here, but with the same age, same father's name and same mother's first name. There are many of Valcour Gauthier's decendants working to unravel that connection. Many believe that the Lewis listed her is Valcour but are unable to explain Valcour's death record! I have not found any other reference to an "Elizabeth DAVID" in this time period. She is not listed in the DAVID family genealogy book found in the La State Archives. I have not found a record of Thomas J. after this census. Within a few houses of the above family is the family of Valentine Deville (age 28) and Peter Wiley Deville (age 26). This Valentine is Elizabeth Deville's brother. Footnote: In June 2004, Jerry Bordelon published on Ancestery.Com and other places Michael's connection to parents Joseph Gauthier and Elizabeth Deville. He got this information from me (see info exchange about 4/23/04 on http://genforum.genealogy.com/gauthier/ ) but then mysteriously connected Michael's brother Joseph to the wrong wife. He also made an assumption that Lewis is Valcour, which may not be correct. Neither issue is of critical importance to our family genealogy. Click here to return to Finding Michael.
